Birds in Greenspaces is a new UK-wide citizen science project that will take place in 2026. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) are currently planning a UK-wide pilot that will run between April and June 2025, that will ask volunteers to record birds in one or more local greenspaces. In addition they will be carrying out targeted pilot work in 6 UK towns and cities, including Glasgow to collect key feedback on project engagement and greenspace mapping.

By using data gathered by Birds in Greenspaces volunteers on which and how many birds are using these sites, we can understand just how vital these areas are for our national bird populations and create detailed habitat management plans for different types of greenspaces.

Birds in Greenspaces is a beginner-friendly survey, and anyone can take part, whether you’re a seasoned ornithologist or it’s your first time observing birds! As part of collecting information for this project, BTO want to get more people interacting with and learning about the wildlife in their local greenspaces.
