Voles in the city: ecology, distribution and conservation of endangered water voles in Greater Glasgow

Glasgow is home to a nationally significant population of endangered water voles. While this species is usually found in freshwater habitats, Glasgow’s urban grasslands are known to support high densities of fossorial water voles not found anywhere else in the UK. Using a combined approach of citizen science data, field surveys, and genetics, and in partnership with Glasgow City Council, a team at the University of Glasgow is studying this unique population to better understand how to protect it. In this talk, Erin will discuss the ecology of Glasgow’s water voles, how and where to spot them, and ways to contribute to their conservation in Scotland.
