Hair today, gone tomorrow!

A rarity to look out for in the current frosty weather. Last night at the PNHS meeting, Nigel Scriven, showed a photo of the Hair ice he and Catriona spotted at Bank Brae woods, Glentyan, Kilbarchan, on 8th January. Here’s his photo of it, quite a remarkable sight. Hair ice requires very specific conditions toContinueContinue reading “Hair today, gone tomorrow!”

T Norman Tait

8 August 1942 – 9 December 2024 The recent death of Norman Tait, aged 82, after a short period in hospital brings great sadness to many of us in the Society who had the pleasure of his company and benefits of his enthusiasm for wildlife matters. Over many years he was an active member andContinueContinue reading “T Norman Tait”

Book review: The Bees by Laline Paull

Review by Kirsty Menzies The fascinating talk on beekeeping and pollinators by Jacqualine Ferguson in November brought to mind a book I read a few years ago. Very much like Jacqualine’s talk, the book “The Bees” by Laline Paull takes you through a year in the life of a beehive. But this is a beeContinueContinue reading “Book review: The Bees by Laline Paull”

Biodiversity and planning webinar series

Biodiversity and Planning in Scotland is the theme of the APRS and Planning Democracy Winter Webinar Series. It is partly inspired by the number of enquiries they receive on planning where people express their concern for the potential loss of biodiversity and don’t always feel this is given appropriate weight in a planning decision. WhyContinueContinue reading “Biodiversity and planning webinar series”

Book review: The Lives of Lichens: A Natural History by Lucking & Spribille

Review by Craig Postlethwaite This is the first general, wide audience book onlichens that has been published for nearly 25 years. The older books (Understanding Lichens by Baronand New Naturalist 86: Lichens by Gibbons) werewritten before modern techniques such as DNAsequencing allowed a greater understanding of the complexities of lichens so a new book isContinueContinue reading “Book review: The Lives of Lichens: A Natural History by Lucking & Spribille”

Gay Christie MBE– a remarkable woman

For all the time that I have know Gay, it was always Gay and Andy, inseparable in everything they did. Gay and Andy were committed active members of the Paisley Natural History Society. In the mid seventies when I arrived in Paisley Museum I soon became good friends with them. They were regulars at ourContinueContinue reading “Gay Christie MBE– a remarkable woman”
