The Clyde Amphibian and Reptile Group (CARG) is recommencing the Greater Glasgow Pond Survey. They seek volunteers – old and new, regardless of experience, ability or background – to carry out surveys across amphibian breeding habitats. The purpose of the survey is to continue year-year assessment of the distribution and status of amphibian populations and their habitats across and surrounding Glasgow.
It’s a great way to get into nature and explore new areas, whether with friends, family or strangers! It’s also an opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge whilst contributing to efforts in understanding our local amphibian populations.
To get involved they ask that those interested join in online for an introduction and some initial training on Wednesday 25th February 18:30 GMT. If there is interest, they can also hold an in-person mock survey(s).
The introduction and training will include:
- An introduction to the Amphibian Reptile Groups (ARGs) UK & CARG
- The need for monitoring amphibians and reptiles
- The amphibians of the UK & their ecology
- Surveying for amphibians & the survey protocol
- How to get involved
The initial surveys will commence in early March to monitor common frogs and their spawn. Further surveys will be needed for toads and newts – more information will be provided on the 25th.
If you are interested in contributing to the surveys, please respond to clydeargsecretary@gmail.com with your name, email address, and availability to attend the online training session (a recording can be provided if you cannot attend). Please share this with individuals and groups you think would be interested in participating.
Please note that responding to this call for volunteers does not commit you to taking part, and that the later surveys will be optional, with the principal need being for day-time spawn surveyors in March.
