Lichen outing, Gleniffer Braes/Bardrain Wood

Group of people standing on a grassy slope and photographing lichens on rocks protruding from the ground

Saturday 28th February 2026

The now annual lichen walk will be led by Craig Postlethwaite.

The walk will start at the “substation” car park and we will walk along the braes and down in to Bardrain Wood and then back along slightly different paths. It will be a walk of around 3.5 miles along reasonable paths with some slopes. It’s expected the walk will last 3-4 hours to allow for stops to look at lichens.

We will expect to see several Cladonia species, Stereocaulons, some large white crusts, common lichens on trees and the end point of the outward walk will be at a Scot’s Pine with some Bryoria fuscescens, which is considered a clean air indicator.

We will meet at the substation car park off Gleniffer Road. NS451602. This is the small car park on the right past the main Robertson Car Park if you are heading out of Paisley (shown by the Orange P marker on the map).  There is no suitable public transport options to here but if anyone needs a lift up the hill from one of the bus stops on the 26 route then they should let us know.

Bring a pack lunch. Appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn.

Get in touch to let us know if you are coming, if you want a lift, or for further information.
