Moth night, Muirshiel

Trap with bright light set up on a table and camp chair in foreground

Friday 20th (backup Saturday 21st) June 2025

Gordon Phillips is running a “moth catching night” at Muirshiel Country Park.

Setting up the trap(s) will start about 21.45 to be ready for sunset at 22.07 and moths arriving (hopefully) by 22.30.  We envisage trapping for a couple of hours.  Arrive when it suits, leave when it suits.

If you have a butterfly/moth net bring it along – with a good torch in hand you can often catch interesting specimens along the various paths.  A few containers to put your catch in would be handy.

With luck, you might also see the occasional bat, frog, toad or newt – bonus points for a fox.

Meet at the Watermill Hotel car park Paisley at 9pm for car sharing or Muirshiel Visitors’ Centre, Calder Glen Road, Lochwinnoch PA12 4LB (Grid ref NS 312 631, as shown by the red marker on the map) at 9:45pm.

Wear suitable clothing for being out at night, with showers of rain, on potentially rough paths.  Torches of course and a folding chair might prove handy but is not essential. Toilets will be open, thanks to Ranger Pat Elmslie. Also, no need to bring hot drinks and snacks as Pat will have the urn on and Anne Phillips is bringing home baking.

Please get in touch to let us know you are coming and if you need a lift.
