Lichen outing, Gleniffer Braes Country Park

Saturday 18th January 2025

The now annual lichen walk will be in Gleniffer Braes Country Park, led by Craig Postlethwaite.

We will meet at the entrance on Nethercraigs Road, Paisley (marked by the orange pin on the map). This is on the number 26 bus route from Glasgow/Braehead and the centre of Paisley. The nearest bus stop is about 100m east of the meeting point (marked by the yellow circle). On a Saturday there are buses every 10-12 minutes and the journey from the centre of Paisley takes around 20 minutes. The only available parking is on the road.

The walk will take around 2 hours and is mainly on grass or muddy paths. There is one very short steep section to get to some rocks but otherwise the paths are either flat or gentle inclines. Appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn.

We will be focussing on crustose lichens but will see Peltigera, Cladonia, Jelly lichen and some less common species like Baeomyces rufus, Normandina pulchella and Coenogonium luteum. We will also go through an area of Hawthorn scrub where there will be an opportunity for people to practice identification of common epiphytic lichens.
