It’s October – time to celebrate the Badger. The charity Scottish Badgers organise the month-long Brocktober festival to raise awareness of badgers and the issues they face. Entering into the spirit of the festival, Paisley Natural History Society are delighted that Joe Connelly, Species Protection/Information Officer with Scottish Badgers, is giving the talk at our October meeting this coming Thursday 5th October.
Joe will look at the current state of the badger population in Scotland and discuss some of the threats to badgers including development, badger baiting and other wildlife crime.
All are welcome to come along. Details of venue and times can be found on our Talks page.
There are lots of other events going on throughout the month so check out the Scottish badgers Brocktober page to see what’s on. In Renfrewshire, Friends of Jenny’s Well are running a Badgers and Bluebells event on Sunday 29th October. All are invited to come along to Jenny’s Well Local Nature Reserve in Paisley between 1-4 pm, to help plant 1000 woodland wildflowers (including bluebells).
There will be 31 pieces of B-rock art hidden around Jenny’s Well Nature Reserve to find and keep. Only one of these will be a rare Golden Brock! So keep your peepers peeled on 29th and see if you can find it.
The event is in partnership with Action Earth and Scottish Badgers.

If this has got you in the mood for all things badgerish, be sure and watch Channel 5’s programme Badgers: Their secret world on catch-up. It has some amazing footage of badgers and is a fascinating insight to their life and behaviour. Be aware of cuteness overload!
